You Don't Have Permission in Mac OS When Installing the Driver

Modified on Wed, 28 Oct at 2:28 PM

Issue

After downloading the GAOMON driver, the extracted folder may appear with a restricted icon.

When you try to open it, a dialog box pops up stating: "You don't have permission" (or similar wording). This prevents you from accessing the installer and completing the setup.

Cause

macOS includes robust security features (such as Gatekeeper and Privacy protections) designed to prevent unauthorized software from running. When a downloaded file or application does not have the correct access privileges assigned, or when the system blocks the driver from controlling your tablet, macOS will deny access. You must manually grant permission using an administrator account.

Solution

Several layers of permissions may need to be adjusted. Please follow the methods below in order.

  1. Method 1: Grant Folder Permissions
If the error occurs when trying to open the downloaded folder or file, you need to change its sharing and permissions settings.
    1. Right-click (or Control-click) on the GaomonTablet folder and select "Get Info".
      • Note: If you are left-handed and have swapped the primary and secondary mouse buttons, simply left-click the folder instead.
    2. In the Info window, expand the "Sharing & Permissions" section.
    3. Click the lock icon in the bottom right corner to unlock the settings.
    4. You will be prompted to enter your administrator name and password.
    5. Once unlocked, change the privilege for your user account (or "everyone") to "Read & Write".
    6. Close the window and try opening the folder again.
  2. Method 2: Grant Accessibility & Security Permissions (For Driver Functionality)
Even if the folder opens, macOS may block the driver from functioning correctly (e.g., pen pressure or cursor movement fails) until it is explicitly authorized in the system's Privacy settings. This step is critical for macOS 10.14 (Mojave) and later. (How To Install The GAOMON Driver (for Mac))
    1. Install the driver by dragging the GaomonTablet icon into your Applications folder. Then, double-click GaomonTablet in Applications to launch it.
    2. Trigger the permission prompt: Press any express key on your GAOMON tablet, or tap the stylus on the tablet surface. This action should automatically call up an "Accessibility Access" dialog box.
      • Important: When this box appears, click "Open System Preferences" (or "Open System Settings" on newer macOS). Do NOT click "Deny." If you click Deny, you will have to uninstall and reinstall the driver to trigger the prompt again.
    3. In the Security & Privacy (or Privacy & Security) window, go to the Privacy tab and select Accessibility from the left-hand list.
    4. Click the lock icon and enter your admin password to make changes.
    5. Check the box next to TabletDriverAgent to allow it to control your computer.
    6. Also add GaomonTablet: Click the "+" button below the list, navigate to your Applications folder, select GaomonTablet, and click Open to add it to the list.
  3. Method 3: Check Input Monitoring (For Newer macOS Versions)
On recent versions of macOS (Catalina and later), the driver may also require permission under Input Monitoring to track pen input correctly.
    1. Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) > Privacy & Security.
    2. Scroll down and select Input Monitoring.
    3. Ensure that TabletDriverAgent and GaomonTablet are listed and toggled ON. If they are not listed, click the "+" button to add them from your Applications folder.

Additional Troubleshooting

If the permissions are granted but the tablet still does not work, try the following steps:

  • Reinstall the Driver: Permissions sometimes become "corrupted" in macOS, where the system does not recognize that permission has already been given. Uninstall the GAOMON driver completely, reboot your Mac, and reinstall the latest driver from the official download page.
  • Remove and Re-add Permissions: Go to Privacy & Security > Accessibility and Input Monitoring. Select TabletDriverAgent and GaomonTablet from the list and click the "-" (minus) button to remove them. Reboot your Mac, then open these settings again and re-enable or re-add the applications.
  • Time Limit for Permissions: On some macOS versions, the security prompt to allow the driver must be accepted within 30 minutes of installation. If the time window has passed, uninstall the driver and start the installation process again.
  • Use a Different Admin Account: In rare cases, the permission database for your specific user account may be damaged. Try creating a new administrator user on your Mac, log in to that account, and install the driver to see whether the permissions work correctly. This can help isolate whether the issue is account-specific.
